Urge Taiwan to Improve Government-Run Animal Shelters
As you probably know, PETA has been working to improve animal shelters in Taiwan for many years, using tactics ranging from investigations to government meetings to protests. At the same time, the Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST) has been monitoring government-run animal shelters, and while a few of these have improved over time, a new EAST investigation reveals that conditions are still deplorable in most shelters. Investigators have observed the following:
- Animals are placed in garbage dumps, cemeteries, and slaughterhouses and often left with food that is infested with ants, maggots, and mildew. Many are not given any sustenance and are left to die of thirst or starvation.
- "Housing" provided for animals often consists of tiny, cramped cages that are left outdoors, exposing animals to the elements.
- Animals are caged without behavioral assessment, leaving smaller animals to be bullied and injured in fights.
- Animals are not given any medical attention or supervision, leaving those with infections or diseases to suffer and die while maggots eat away at their flesh.
- Animals' corpses are left to rot. Dog fur and skeletons are often found in abandoned cages or strewn around junkyards.
It is an outrage that animals are allowed to suffer this way. These shelters are an embarrassment to Taiwan and its government. Please send a polite e-mail to Taiwanese officials urging them to take action to improve conditions at the country's animal shelter. Ask them to set up national animal welfare standards for shelters and ensure that the shelters are audited regularly in order to make sure that the standards are followed and that the shelters have properly trained staff.
