Tell Iams That You Won't Buy While Animals Die

For nearly 10 months in 2002 and early 2003, a PETA U.S. investigator went undercover at an Iams contract testing laboratory and discovered a dark and sordid secret beneath the wholesome image of the dog- and cat-food manufacturer. Undercover footage captured images of dogs who went crazy from intense confinement to barren steel cages and cement cells, dogs who were left piled on a filthy paint-chipped floor after having chunks of muscle removed from their thighs, dogs who were surgically debarked, and horribly sick dogs and cats who languished in their cages, neglected and left to suffer with no veterinary care. In addition to the pain that these animals experienced in the course of experiments, animals in Iams labs were denied companionship and enrichment and were confined to their barren cages for at least 23 1/2 hours every day.

PETA U.S. has met with Iams' director of research on several occasions since its investigation to discuss Iams' transition to humane feeding tests conducted in homes and veterinary offices using animals volunteered by their guardians, and although improvements have been made, the situation is still dire for many animals forced to endure painful and unnecessary tests for Iams' companion animal food.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released an official complaint against Iams' former contract testing laboratory, stating that it "has shown a lack of good faith" and alleging violations documented by government inspectors at the contract laboratory between 2002 and 2005, including failure to ensure that personnel were trained to perform experiments on animals and failure to provide veterinary care and to observe animals daily. See the complete list of violations here.

PETA U.S. has made progress, but Iams and Procter & Gamble (Iams' parent company)—which also owns the Eukanuba line of pet food—still have a long way to go! Please write to Iams and Proctor & Gamble officials today to tell them that you won't buy their products until they end all laboratory tests on animals.
